A DANGEROUS PRISONER
It was late in 1983 when Mark Lawrence decided that the time had come to turn his killing fantasy into reality. The 22-year-old had nurtured the fantasy for seven years, developing the detail, and he knew exactly what he wanted to do—in fact, what he had to do. The urge was so strong he could no longer contain it. For years, these particular mental images had provided the rocket fuel for his masturbating, which he did up to seven times a day. Sometimes other thoughts or images entertained him, but most often it was the vision of sexual killing he found most thrilling. Now he had to find his chosen victim and make it real.
Mark left his room in the male admission ward of Wolston Park mental hospital and headed for the canteen, which was accessible to low-security patients who wanted a snack or an alternative to the food in their ward’s dining area. The hospital housed some 1200 patients in twenty wards. It was located on a huge site beside the Brisbane River, on the outskirts of the Queensland capital. Down towards the river, near a dam, was a wide swathe of thick bush. Mark had explored the area and knew it well.
The woman who had starred in Mark’s fantasy for some weeks now was another low-security patient whom he had picked out during previous visits to the canteen. But he was very disappointed to find she was not in the canteen that morning. At first he was undecided about what to do. Should he postpone the event until she appeared again? No, the urge was too strong, and he had primed himself to do it today. So he settled on another young woman in the canteen that day, Julie, whom he had spoken to on a few occasions. Mark bought a large bottle of soft drink and asked Julie if she’d like to join him for a drink down by the dam. She agreed and they set off on a path towards the river.
As soon as they were out of sight and earshot of the hospital buildings, Mark grabbed Julie by the throat. This was how his fantasy started. First, grab the woman by the throat to subdue her, then rip her clothes off, rape her, and finally cut her throat. The last part was the most thrilling and sexually exhilarating for Mark. It would be the fulfilment of his fantasy. But Mark quickly learned that fantasy and reality didn’t necessarily match.
He’d always imagined his victim would be readily overcome. In Julie’s case, he believed she wasn’t the brightest young woman, and that her chronic mental illness had further dulled her intellectual capacities, making her an easy target. But she turned out to be fit and strong, and not such a ready victim. When Mark tried to throw her to the ground, Julie fought back fiercely. She screamed so loudly that Mark was concerned any waterskiers on the river might hear her. He finally managed to get her onto the ground and put his hand on her mouth, telling her to shut up.
